Fish Creek Market - December 5

Fish Creek School is holding our 4^th annual student-led market in support of  The Calgary Humane Society!

Who:  

• Students in grades 1 – 6
• Kindergarten students will have the opportunity to visit and shop at the Market
• Students make crafts etc. at home prior to December 5. We encourage students to reuse and recycle materials they have at home.
• Parents are welcome and encouraged to join us at 10:30 am for the Market! The market will close around 11:30 am.

What: 

• A market run by students in grade 1 – 6. Students are encouraged to make a craft, game or product to sell to other students – proceeds to charity. 
• This will be an opportunity for students to purchase affordable holiday gifts for friends and family
• To purchase items at the market, students will purchase Minnows (Fish Creek currency) prior to Market Day. $5 dollars = 20 Minnows (if families want to donate more, this is welcomed, however 20 minnows is the maximum for each student). 
• Watch for further details on how to purchase Minnows
• Most items at the Market will be priced for 2 – 3 Minnows

Where: All areas of Fish Creek School

• Crafts/items should be at school on Thursday, December 4.  This allows students to set up their tables and do last minute touches

When: Friday, December 5, beginning at 10:00 am (students only)/Familes and friends welcome at 10:30 am. 

Here is what we’re hoping this experience will do for students:

• Provide an experience to apply financial literacy skills
• Get students personally invested in doing something for the community
• Fun experience for students to engage in with a purpose: supporting a charity
• Opportunity to express creativity at low or no cost to families and school (repurpose materials)
• Create a school environment that encourages the entrepreneurial spirit

We hope that all students in grades 1-6 will participate by creating or doing something for the market. This will help them earn more minnows to spend!

What can students make?

• Please, NO food of any kind.
• Try to use things you already have or reuse/recycle waste around the house (like cardboard or plastic containers)
• A Google Image search for “kids upcycle craft” or “school market craft ideas” gives lots of ideas
• Items made should not be purchased for re-sale. However, items can be purchased to help build the craft. Example - Purchasing googly eyes for painted rocks.
• Some ideas for crafts:

  • String or beaded bracelets
  • Small pieces of artwork
  • Bookmarks

What if a student doesn’t want to make crafts?

• Feel free to create an experience instead
• Students have to supply equipment
• All activities will happen indoors, so please keep this in mind

  • Paper airplane making
  • Spin the Wheel
  • Music performance
