We’ve had a lovely week at Fish Creek School. Our students have been enjoying the beautiful weather, having many of their physical education classes and lunch periods outside. Many of our classes have taken trips to Fish Creek Park, bringing back observations about the natural world in the form of drawings, paintings, and written notes. Please take the time to talk to your children about their outside experiences with their classes.

Everyday Math Ideas

Some classes have begun countdowns to the end of the school year. I spent some time talking with a particular Grade 3 class about how there are different ways of looking at the number of days left, when you consider that early dismissal days are not quite as long as full days.

  • For younger children, you can ask if their class is running a countdown. You might take out a calendar and verify the length of the countdown, “Your class countdown says there are nine days left, but when I look at this calendar, I see something different. Could you explain how this works to me?”
  • For older children, you might ask about the number of hours, “So, you’ve got nine days left. How would you figure out how many hours that is?” With a question like that, there is some ambiguity, and a few different ways to look at it. The significant learning value is in the interesting conversation about the mathematical thinking process.

Canlearn Friends

The Canlearn Society is offering a number of free Friends programs this summer, both at the CanLearn Society office downtown and at the Salvation Army Resource Centre in Forest Lawn. Please see that attached flyer with more details.

Sinkhole Remediation Project Update

We would like to thank Spruce it Up for making a generous donation towards this project. An order for materials has been placed and we are on track to being work on 22 June at 9:00 am.

We are still looking for volunteers to help. Many hands make light work. We need your help to fill in several sinkholes that have developed in the div 1 park, the div 2 park, and at the front of the school.  These sinkholes not only disrupt our children's activities when filled with rain water but also pose as tripping hazards, breaking ankles. If you have any tools like rakes, gloves, or shovels, please bring them along.  We are definitely in need of wheelbarrows and/or rototillers - please let Danny Yip know if you have these tools to use for this work.

  • Join us on June 22 starting at 9am (weather permitting), until finished. Please sign up here
