Dear families of Fish Creek School,

This week, our Grade 6 students visited the Police Interpretive Centre to learn about crime prevention and the use of forensic science in solving crime. Our School Council convened on Tuesday evening, and generous volunteers coordinated a fun lunch on Thursday for students in their finest tie-dyed outfits.

Everyday Math Ideas

My children have demonstrated a talent for collecting Lego, but when it comes to actually playing with it, they seem to be more likely to engage when I pose a challenge to them.

  • For younger children, you can pose a “100 piece challenge”. Suggest a theme, like robots or dog houses, and then have your child count out 100 pieces that they’ll use to build the best one they can. If they don’t use all of the pieces, ask them to count how many pieces they have left over.
  • For older children, a “100 piece challenge” could be to build the tallest possible tower or longest possible span, providing an opportunity for children to take measurements. Perhaps this could even be an opportunity for a friendly competition.

Parent Patrol with Mike

Mr. Hebenton is looking for some enthusiastic parent volunteers to join him in patrolling the sidewalk along the pull-through for the week of April 29 to May 3. The goal is to gently encourage an efficient “hug and drive” approach to dropping off children in the morning. If you are interested, the best way to express your interest is contact Mr. Hebenton at mdhebenton@cbe.ab.ca.

Read-A-Thon

As we enter the last stage of the Read-A-Thon, we would like to thank all of our families for being so supportive of our students’ efforts to raise funds for the Fish Creek School Council. This is their only fundraiser of the year and an excellent opportunity to show your support for their work in the school.

Giant Mud Pits

The spring mud has kept our staff busy helping children cope with unexpectedly dirty clothing. The greatest need has been for clean socks and pants. If you think your child may be drawn to the mud, we would like to suggest some spare clothing in their school bag.

One World Drum Residency

From May 6 to 10, One World Drum will take up residency at Fish Creek School, bringing West African drumming to our students. They have been bringing their knowledge of the djembe to schools for over 30 years, and we are looking forward to hearing the rhythmic sounds of drumming echoing through our halls.

Volunteer Tea

On the 3 of May we will be hosting an event to thank our volunteers for their generous contributions to Fish Creek School our students. The invitation is attached below. You can RSVP using this Form.

Volunteer Celebration

Walk and Wheel to School

Join us on Monday, April 22, 2024, as we stride towards a greener, healthier planet with our Earth Day Walk & Wheel event! Embrace the spirit of Earth Day by choosing active travel options like walking, cycling, or scooting to school and around your neighbourhood. By reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly transportation, we're not just taking steps, but rolling wheels towards a brighter, cleaner future for generations to come. Together, we'll demonstrate the power of collective action in combating climate change and fostering sustainable healthy habits.
