Dear families of Fish Creek School,

If you visited the school this week, you may have noticed some very small people with grey hair, walking with canes and carrying signs and projects with messages like, “Pushing my teacher’s buttons for 100 days.” You may also have noticed a 15’ tall ursine guest in our multipurpose area. Don’t worry, his behavior was impeccable. On Thursday, you may have gotten the impression that we are apprenticing young people in the forestry sector, as they were bedecked in flannel of every pattern imaginable.

School Planning Engagement

At our last School Council meeting, members engaged with school administration, learning and providing feedback about the School Development Plan and school fees. Council members completed a survey to provide feedback about the process. Results are published here.

Our next step in school planning engagement is to ask all of our families to complete our survey. This survey will provide us with specific information that we will use when making decisions about our School Development Plan and the way we support everyday learning with additional experiences such as field trips, residencies, and curricular enhancement materials. You can access the survey here.

After gathering information from this survey, we will report our results, and then seek additional information about your values and priorities. For example, if parents reports that residencies are a particularly high priority, we would like to hear what you have to say about the different residencies available.

Please complete this survey by March 8. Thank you, your responses are important to us!

Everyday Math Ideas

After recognizing the 100th day of school, there may be an opportunity to engage your children in conversation about the school calendar. The 2024-25 CBE school calendar is available online here.

  • For younger children, before asking them to count the days, try starting off with some estimation, “Which month do you think will have the 100th day of school next year?” After they give you their idea, take a moment and ask them how they decided on their answer, and then you can ask them to check by counting.
  • For older children, you could move beyond the current school year. “You’ve been in school for a hundred days this year. Could you estimate when you had your 1000th day of school? How many days do you think your teacher has had? Do you think anyone ever reaches 10 000 days?”

Ever Active Schools Project

This week students in Kindergarten through grade 4 participated in a “How to get to and from school safely’ presentation. We are encouraged by our students’ enthusiasm toward being more aware while travelling to school, whether by foot or by car. Please ask your child about the presentation and ways in which we are trying to encourage more active travel to/from school and overall safety.

This morning we were delighted to hear from a few parents that they will be walking to and from school from now on.

Roughnecks Lacrosse Game

FCS Parent Association is headed back to the Saddledome to cheer on the Calgary Roughnecks as they face the San Diego Seals!!   Lacrosse games are high energy and action-packed, so we're in for an exciting evening. Music plays during the entire game and lacrosse is widely known as “the fastest sport on two feet.”

The game is on Friday, March 15 at 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $35.45 each, with $5 from each ticket donated back to the parent association.  Our school will be seated in the same section (223).  Please purchase tickets here:  www.roughnecksgroups.com/Fishcreek
