Dear families of Fish Creek School,
We would like to wish you pleasant and refreshing March Break. Best of luck surviving April Fool’s Day. We look forward to seeing the students back on April 2.
Everyday Math Ideas
During times away from school, when my schedule is slightly less regimented, I inevitably receive morning requests for things like pancakes and waffles. I like to leverage that interest to get my children to do some math. My dream is that one day they’ll serve me a Father’s Day breakfast that’s a little more sophisticated than cold toast.
- For younger children, I like to delegate the responsibility of finding the correct measuring cups and spoons, “This says that we need 1 ½ cups of flour. Can you find a 1 cup and a ½ cup measure for me?”
 - For older children, I like to show them my recipe for waffle or pancake batter, and then ask them to double it for me, “If one recipe takes 1 ¾ cups of milk, how much should we use for a double recipe? Could you do it without using a ¼ cup measure?”

Parent Conferences
This afternoon and evening, the halls of Fish Creek School were filled with the excited voices of children bringing their parents and siblings to their classes to show off the results of their hard work. As I toured the school, visiting classes and talking to parents, I could clearly see pride on the faces of our students as they demonstrated what they’ve learned, whether it be the techniques used to create a piece of art representing different elements of Inuit culture, or the process of creating a light switch. The enthusiasm and positive energy were clearly apparent in every classroom. It is clear to us that this community supports our students and values their learning. Thank you for all that you do.
FCS Read-A-Thon coming soon!
We are excited to share with you that our school council will begin a FCS Read-A-Thon once we return from break. We will kick this off fundraiser that focuses on reading with students early in the week and communicate with you all the fine details. School Council has come up with some very fun and exciting prizes. Watch for this information when we return.

Community Barn Dance
Grab your hat and boots and head to Fish Creek's Community Barn Dance on Thursday, April 11, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We will have a live band in Fish Creek's gym. Dances are structured and will be taught on the spot by Caller, Leslie Gotfrit, lesliegotfrit.com. No prior experience is necessary. All children require a partner for dancing (under 7 requires an adult partner). We encourage families to dance together. A copy of the flyer is here:
Purchase tickets for $5 at HealthyHunger.ca. No paper tickets are issued - you are added to the door list.  As always, each child must be accompanied by an adult.  Numbers are limited to ensure space in the gym and tickets will sell out. Snacks and drinks available for cash purchase.
We love our volunteers!  We can't hold events without you.  Please sign up to volunteer during the dance here.
