Dear families of Fish Creek School,

Today, against the backdrop of African drumming, we had a cadre of youthful and enthusiastic apprentices take on a variety of educator roles here at Fish Creek School. With their ID cards on breakaway lanyards around their necks, they taught lessons, practiced their classroom management skills, and helped supervise a fire drill.

Reflections of a Principal

“Today, I was principal for a day. I really didn’t know what to expect, but after doing it for a day, I think it’s really cool what principals do. In the morning, I supervised patrols and led kids into the school. Then, I went and did daily check-ins with some of the classes. I read to a class, then even ran a fire drill. The office staff do a lot more than you see, they’re very hard workers. This day was a day that I’ll never forget. It was really fun.”

Reflections of an Assistant Principal

“I was assistant principal for a day. I thought I was just doing principal stuff, but I wasn’t. There was a lot more. Let me tell you all about it. In the morning I saw if everybody is safe and behaving and then I got ready for a fire drill. I checked to see if all the doors were shut. I had a vest on and I had a walkie talkie with me. Soon, I will read to Kindergarten. Do you want to do this?”

Everyday Math Ideas

During our day with our apprentice administrators, we had the opportunity to point out the everyday math that governs our day. With a heavily-scheduled morning, we frequently had to refer to the clock and quickly calculate how much time we had before the next commitment. Perhaps there is an opportunity for you to talk to your children about the math that you’ve used at work.

  • For younger children, you might talk about things that you need to count at work. For example, in my job I count copies of handouts for students, or desks in classrooms, or students in a group on a field trip. What do you count at work?
  • For older children, you might talk about functions like multiplication. For example, when I’m figuring out supervision schedules, I need to multiply the number of minutes by the number of times it has to be done; 25 minutes of supervision on a Monday is not the same as 25 minutes on a Wednesday. When do you use multiplication at work?

One World Drumming

This past week, Kindergarten to Grade 6 students filled the music room with the joyful sounds of West African Drumming.  Thanks to the expertise of Mr. K., students learned about the history of the djembe drum, a new language, and played simple to complex rhythm patterns.  Want to learn more?  Just ask your child about chocolate milk and potato chips!!

Thank you to the School Council for sponsoring this week long residency!

Planning for Sports Day

We have begun our planning for Sports Day, which will occur on Friday, May 31. We will be setting up approximately 24 stations for all of our students to experience. What we need is our wonderful volunteers to run many of the stations. If you are a cleared volunteer and can join us in making this day fantastic for our students, please sign up through the following link:

In-Class Snacks

Some teachers allow students to have snacks during class time. It has been our experience that healthy snacks are the best choice. We recommend snacks like fresh fruit and vegetables. We discourage pop and chips.
